Portugal is best known for port and wine, but over the last decade it has also become one of Europe’s most exciting places for gin. A new generation of Portuguese craft gins uses local botanicals, Atlantic citrus and a strong sense of place to create spirits that taste unmistakably of Portugal.

In this guide we look at what makes Portuguese gin different and where GREENleap Gin fits in.

What makes a gin “Portuguese”?

Like every gin, Portuguese gin is a neutral spirit flavoured with juniper. What sets the best Portuguese gins apart is everything around the juniper: the choice of botanicals, the climate they grow in and the way the gin is meant to be enjoyed.

Portuguese producers often work with ingredients that reflect the country’s landscape: bright citrus, aromatic flowers, herbs and spices that have travelled through Portuguese ports for centuries. The result is usually a fresh, aromatic and food-friendly gin rather than a heavy, juniper-only style.

GREENleap: the green gin from Portugal

GREENleap Gin ORIGINAL is a Portuguese craft gin created in the north of Portugal, near Porto. Its botanical profile combines finger lime, jasmine blossom and pansy, giving fresh citrus character, delicate floral notes and subtle spice, with a long, clean finish.

In 2025, GREENleap was awarded 98 points and a Gold Medal at the London Spirits Competition and named Portugal Spirit of the Year 2025.
